Filter Bubbles

Before reading the article and watching this video I had no idea what a filter bubble was. When I listened to the lecture by Eli Pariser, it made me feel a little weird to know that when I enter something into a search engine it specifically made to what I want to know. But then I thought this is not necessarily a bad thing. Filter bubbles, in a way, are helpful in a sense that they are able to tell what you are interested in just because of your previous searches or what you click on Facebook. Though this can be both helpful it’s a little strange as well. Maybe I would like to go outside of my “comfort zone” and look at things that I never thought I would be interested in. I think the suggestions for getting rid of filter bubbles could work. I think deleting your history and watching what type of information you put on websites, such as Facebook, can make a huge change in your research. If there is no “paper trail” there is no way your searches can be limited to just your usual answers or responses. I think I will try deleting the history on my computer. I think it will help a great deal and I will see a change in my upcoming results.

  1. I definitely agree that a search engine keeping tabs on what you have previously searched or clicked on is somewhat strange. It opened my eyes to how influential computer are in today's time. When I watched the video, I started think about the example Parisen gave of his Facebook page. He most often clicked on the post that supported his political stance. After a while, because of filter bubbles the opposing political views disappeared from his news feed. If we always see information that supports our beliefs, views or thought; how will we be challenged or knowledgeable about the opposing arguments?

  2. I agree I also had no clue what a filter bubble was. I was surprised that when I found out that it filters out certain things and boxes in you around your specific interest. They can be beneficial but filter bubbles need some work so that you can look into other things as well ass your personal interest.
